Elegy for a Vampire
Some call me demon, but have they held The still watch, listened to the death rattle of love? There is no returning from this song From this final rush of breath, For what frail difference lies between The moment of warmth and the sudden chill?
The young call me demon for they have not held The still watch, listened to the nightingale As one year turns into a thousand But old men recognize me for what I am At the end of their hours, haunted by dreams Visions of another world, another time
When flesh was warm and sweet, now only Ghosts visit and claim their fading territory Anxious voices with messages from heaven or hell We are all vampires once in our lives Before the silent fall into eternity
