Barren

She was barren, so she had to buy
roses and fat daffodils and line
the pots side by side for thirty
feet across her back porch fence

The flowers gave her all the love
the crazy man who was her husband
couldn't, each color a shade of
passion and emotion denied her

The flowers were her only poems
their scents evoked as with a
written word, the memory of another
life before she reached this desert
